The cause of autoimmunity is poorly understood and it is not known why the body mistakes the body's cells or tissue for a harmful threat. In response to an unknown trigger, the immune system may begin producing antibodies that instead of fighting infections, attack the body's own tissues. Watch the Did-You-Know slideshow.
Autoimmune diseases are not contagious and cannot be passed from one person to another. For example, lupus affects more African-American and Hispanic people than Caucasians. Yet some people are more likely to get an autoimmune disease than others. When it senses these foreign invaders, it sends out an army of fighter cells to attack them. Filtering the blood with a procedure called plasmapheresis is the main treatment for Guillain-Barre syndrome. In cases of immune system over activity, the body attacks and damages its own tissues autoimmune diseases. Weakness results, which can sometimes be severe.
